We have Chinese neighbours, and we're convinced that she beats him up. Every night, without fail, they shout at each other. If we don't hear them, we know that they're not home. Their bathroom is directly opposite mine, with a narrow passage running between buildings, so if their window is open, we can hear them quite well.

This morning, at half-past midnight, I heard a pane glass window breaking. I thought it was one of ours, and rushed around turning on lights to see who was breaking in. In retrospect, I should probably have stayed in bed and waited a while.

I ran into the kitchen, looking out the window, and saw two people as bewildered as I was, standing on the stairs going up to the next storey. I realised that whatever its cause, the broken window was probably unintentional.

Charging around the house took all of 10 seconds, and then I heard the familiar shouting of the neighbours. I went into my bathroom (with the light off), and directly outside was the husband, breathing very heavily. I stayed quiet and checked out the damage. It appears that one of them threw something through their bathroom window. I let my imagination go wild and assumed they were (yet again) attempting to kill one another.

Anyway, the whole point is that I battled to fall asleep again. When I did wake up, it was time to say goodbye to M, who is spending the night at a hospital as part of his course work.

The day isn't improving.
