What a tomcruise* I am! I upgraded the firewall from SmoothWall Express 1.0 to 2.0 at the end of last year, and to test out some of the new functionality, I noticed a certain IP address was seemingly attacking my network, so I blocked it.
Today, about a month later, I discovered that the address was that of SmoothWall’s website. I couldn’t visit the URL, I couldn’t download updates, nada. So now I feel silly. But I also realise that even SmoothWall’s website being blocked proves how reliable the product is. Download it for your network. I endorse it.
* UPDATE (2006/04/26): What is a tomcruise?

The most fascinating thing about holidays is that you sometimes get to spend a lot of time on your own. This December, I had an opportunity to clean up my computer, remove duplicate files, sort data, the usual. To my pleasant surprise, I discovered a piece of original writing from 2002 which was quite remarkable. I recall writing it, but it was lost for two years amongst the billions of bytes I call my computer.
You can read about Ted, or a topical but fictional story called Vinnie the Virus – but be warned, it is not pleasant.
